They should offer joystick control for all vehicles. Younger drivers would certainly have less control problems!

women or men it shouldn't matter. It's the age of these older drivers that can't figure out the gas from the brakes. Just happened in Palm Coast FL...76 yr old woman hit the gas instead of the brakes and plowed into the front entrance of a Publix Supermarket...AND...injuring several people. That would be an awful way to get hurt...pushing your cart around in the store and BAM...you hit the floor for some unknown reason and wake up in the hospital.

"Driver inattention and distraction also were common contributing factors across all age groups, the agency said."
Inattention & distraction. Maybe the reason is multi-tasking.
From Are women really better at multi-tasking? : "It's official: Women really are better than men at juggling more than one task at once...
...So if I'm a woman, multitasking makes me more efficient? Actually, probably not. There is evidence that multitasking is a drag on productivity for pretty much everyone, regardless of gender."

Insufficient data. Pretty hard to mix up a wide pedal for a skinny vertical pedal. Sounds like they are still trying to create logic for cars spontaneously accelerating, since there still is no explanation for it. Having been in a car which did this, I can tell you it has nothing to do with pressing an accelerator pedal.

Gender issues aside, this is nuts. A driver is a driver. Be a responsibile driver and you probably won't have a problem. That doesn't mean that some idiot might not hit you. It doesn't matter how many gadgets they put in a car - which always raises the cost - no one is going to prevent every accident everywhere all the time. It is NOT a perfect world and humans are not going to change that fact. Get over it.

What the hell is a brake-throttle override system? If I accelerate quicky on the interstate on-ramp, will this thing apply the brakes???

There are "about 15 pedal misapplication crashes per month in the United States, and that the drivers in almost two-thirds of such crashes were women." This is too small a sample to draw conclusions about women drivers. According to the NSC, there were about 211 million reported accidents in 2009. NSC

Men have more accidents than women and are more likely to have serious accidents.

Face it, by 76 years old the population of women is far greater than the population of men and so everything they do will show that more of them do it. Stats can be used to show many things and some of them might be true.

You read a bit too much into the "across date sources" statement from NHTSA. Those generalized statements leave much to the imagination of bureaucrats that love adding more gadgets to vehicles in the name of safety. I believe better driver education for all would make a bigger difference in improving our safety on the nation's roadways.

aquarinut "Stupid!!!! Article has same mentality as some redneck non intellectual that is using gender because they lack the mental fortitude to prove their point!!!" ***************************************************************************
I guess reading isn't your strong suit. It looks like the study was pretty straight forward. The breakdown. Accidents occur....police or insurance reports get done and the HTSA collects the data. The data showed that “The most consistent finding across data sources was the striking overrepresentation of females in pedal misapplication crashes, relative to their involvement in all types of crashes,” the agency said in a report" (This means the percentage of women in "pedal misapplication" accidents was greater than the percentage of women in all accidnets.

ANYONE can go through a sh!t happens moment... young, old, male, female, undetermined... and especially the author of the article.
REALLY disappointed that this media outlet would post something like this, especially at this point in time in our history! Should be put in Guinness as one of the biggest blunders of the century!

Instead of further regulation on an entire industry and more things to go wrong for the competent driver and consumer, how about identifying the drivers with deficient skills--men or women. Train them and assess them; if they can't demonstrate competency, pull their license--it is, after all, a privilege.
