Subsidize This: US Eyes Tariffs on Chinese Solar Panels, But What Gets Protected?

Firedoglake -- While trade is often a bone of contention between the U.S. and China, this week’s visit by Chinese V. President Xi Jinping threw the spotlight on one subset of that battle that could have far-reaching effects well in excess of the raw dollar amounts at stake.

At issue is a complaint filed by a solar industry trade group, the Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing asking that the US government impose tariffs on Chinese solar panels. CASM wants the duties for what it claims are unfair subsidies by China that make Chinese solar products substantially cheaper than those offered by many US competitors.

indicate the federal govt set to weigh in on the side of US solar energy companies in this brewing trade war, and so make a stand for domestic green energy manufacturing and good-paying job

So we both subsidize like idiots (although I believe what the author calls subsidies to fossil fuel are actually tax deductions available to most other firms, and gas companies do pay if they damage any water wells). Then we cry unfair. Only good news here is that apparently the Chinese are just as stupid as DC in handing out subsidies.

If the price of good solar panels goes up because of the tariff, then the consumer pays for it. Remember a tariff can hurt the American consumer who pays more. China supports a lot of its industries so its unfair anyhow.

There is an over supply worldwide for solar panels. Prices for solar panels have crashed. Stupid Americans are still willing to pay the inflated prices. It's like paying full price for Christmas ornaments today two months after Christmas. Have you seen the share prices of global solar manufacturing stocks? As for dumping, just ad a tariff. Heck they like the Buick, but have added a tariff to any the are imported from here. Their factory can not keep up with the demand. The just added a $100% tariff on chickens, that is the food for their people, and they jack up the price. Time for a level field, or they will just come on over and say hey, we want the keys to the White House because you owe us so much.

You know we cut way back on buying their tires, my last set are from USA!
