NY man nears 3-million mile mark in '66 Volvo

GasBuddy Blog -- Irv Gordon is a retired schoolteacher living on Long Island in East Patchogue. If you ever want to have a conversation with someone who can advise you on the best way to take care of your car...he's an expert. But you probably won't find him very easily.

Mr. Gordon is 72 and he drives his red 1966 Volvo P1800S coupe everywhere. Apparently, he's been doing that for a long time because he anticipates that his odometer will pass the 3-million milestone some time soon, maybe within the next six months.

He has held the Guinness World Records mark for High Mileage Vehicle since 2002 and was the first person to hold that record.
"It's just a car I enjoy driving," he says.

He bought it new in 1966, and according...

The Long Island School District must pay him a pretty good retirement to be able to "fuel" his unending wanderings.

That's pretty amazing. Personally I get tired of my vehicles when they start to break more frequently and the reliability becomes an inconvenience or a problem.

Just a minute..... What ? I'm playing Pong with Space Invaders on the side. No time to drive or do the upkeep for the '55 Mercury Monterey.
Way to go Merv, uuuuuh! Irv! Almost three million miles in a '66 Volvo! When do you have time to do other things? Keep racking up the miles though!
I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

So...at ~260 miles a day...he doesn't really live in E. Patchogue. I would like to see his mileage logs. I don't believe it...in a Volvo? They still have a hard time staying on the road!

The funny part is, he thinks the value has gone UP with a reported 3 mil miles! I wouldn't give $5 for it because I couldn't afford to fix it!

AC-302. obviously you hadn't read the FULL ARTICLE, as it does say it is the same engine and it hadn't been rebuilt.
