Car navigation options growing more affordable

delawareonline.com -- Automakers are starting to find ways to bring budget navigation to their cheaper cars with integrated systems much cheaper than fancy in-dash models costing upwards of $1,500.

The latest is General Motors’ partnership for a smartphone app called BringGo for the Chevrolet Spark, GM’s smallest and cheapest car, July starting at $12,995 with shipping.

The $50 app lets a buyer can integrate BringGo’s digital maps and turn-by-turn directions into the in-dash screen. “It gives our Spark customers the safety and functionality of a more expensive navigation system,” said Sara LeBlanc, General Motors’ global infotainment manager.

We have GPS in smartphones. But, if you are going to a remote area with no internet available, you need a map to get out of that place.

Why use a map if you can get turn-by-turn instructions from your car? Maps seem a little old fashioned now.

Don't like the built in navigation on my car. Restricted from searching anything unless the car is stopped. I know that's a safety factor but mobile phones are less safe to maneuver for directions.

Now if the cars were only smart enough to watch out for when the driver was distracted. Too many things to distract drivers these days.

Should be a plug-in module in glove box. Unplug and update online then plug back in to glove box - not everyone wants or needs a smartphone. So far Garmin is the best navigator that I have used.

Electronics are getting less expensive (Technology marches on!).

Although I'm not sure in dash screens are a good thing. Strikes me as an invitation to distracted driving.

The cheaper the navigation system the more incorrect and wrong turns it will give you plus you get poor quality.
