It sounds like Honda knew that the car couldn’t get the mileage the EPA claimed it could get. The EPA has an agenda and part of that is to push these EV’s and hybrids. Both the EPA and the car industry are willing to lie about mileage to get what they want. The EPA test is done in very controlled conditions and do not represent the real world.

This small claims court ruling does injustice to Honda, to automobile manufacturing, to U.S, automobile retailing, and to the American public.

Pay the settlement and get real milage in there. We don't care what you can get in a test garage.

I've had one tank right in the ballpark ( between 39 & 40 mpg) on my '11 Elantra which claimed 40 mpg on the highway. Even on a streamlined vehicle like the Elantra, wind is a huge factor. One day as I was traveling north, I was averaging almost 50 mpg for about 40 miles. However, on my return trip into the wind the tank's average came down to 35 mpg. These figures were achieved traveling between 70 & 75 mph. I'm sure if I slowed to the low 60's, I would get better results. Drafting makes a big difference too, but I don't recommend it for most due to distractions (you can't be eating, messing with the radio or cell phone).

You can not assume that you will get the EPA rated MPG. It is possible, but you have to really work at it and most of won't. The purpose of the ratings is so when you are shopping for a car you can compare one model to another and have a fair idea of which gets better mileage.

The point NOT covered adequately by THIS article, is not that YMMV (your mileage may vary) but that there was a SPECIFIC technical problem with the battery pack of SOME years of Honda hybrid models. Years and years before their time, the batteries stopped accepting and holding a 'fast charge' cycle from the gasoline engine/generator. A similar type of problem does occur sometimes in lesser batteries such as those that power a laptop or a cellphone--some will last years and give a long use from a single charge, and others can be charged fully but go flat in hours.

The point is not that hybrids aren't fuel savers--they are. The Honda battery pack design led to far too many of their hybrids with batteries running flat very quickly, so that the gasoline engine was running all the time, with disasterous fuel economy consequences. Toyota generally has very good battery packs, and it is no joke that there are taxis and former taxis on the West Coast (specificially, in Canada in BC) including first generation Prius running still on their original battery packs after 10 years+ and several hundreds of thousands of miles/kilometers. The taxi business is a hard test of durability, and if a taxi/former taxi in Vancouver has 400,000 km/250,000 miles on it, that is like double the mileage for regular car usage.

The point of this lawsuit was that it was a Honda specific problem, and that the class action lawsuit would only result in a meager credit to a purchase of a future car, and not result in either replacement of the faulty battery packs or recovery of money wasted. As well, Honda proposed a technical 'fix' that did little to actually improve mileage.

Don't bash hybrids--bash Honda for making a mess of a problem much much worse by mishandling the fallout instead of fixing the problem properly the first time.

I have noticed that HONDA DRIVERS (more than any other brand) think that they need to be the fastest car on the road. This uses more fuel than driving in a normal manner !!!

About time. The mileage numbers need some basis in reality. The "highway" numbers on my Hyundai Elantra aren't far off the mark, but the "City" numbers are ridiculous. Even suburban driving with stop signs makes crap of these numbers, no less if I had to drive in an actual city like New York or Boston.

.
They should ALL be sweating when Liberal Judges make decisions based on emotions and not facts! Honda has nothing to do with the mileage ESTIMATES, and that is what they are ESTIMATES. It even says "Your Mileage May Vary"! More over the ESTIMATE comes from the EPA and the Government tells the car maker what they are allowed to put on the sticker!
