Ice, logistics delay Shell Alaska drilling plans

Reuters -- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Heavier than expected ice in Arctic waters off Alaska will likely delay until August Royal Dutch Shell Plc's (RDSA.L) long-anticipated exploration drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, a company spokesman said on Friday.

Shell, which wants to search for oil in what are considered remote but promising frontiers, had planned to start the wells this month, said Curtis Smith, a company spokesman in Anchorage.

Sea ice is "the number one reason we won't be drilling in July," Smith told Reuters. "At this point, we're looking at the first week of August."

While sea ice cover is sparse in most of the Arctic, ice off Alaska is thicker than in recent years, and that ice is melting fast, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Probably not the best place to explore. It is a difficult and dangerous area. The best outcome would only be higher oil prices; the worst outcome would be an environmental megadisaster.

"Environmentalists and some Alaska Natives adamantly oppose the drilling plans as too risky in the remote Arctic waters." And how are they ever going to get pizza delivery?

Always some reason the "pipeline" is not going anywhere. Probably those that predicted it would not be constructed were correct !

This not a Democratic economy, way too much regulations and environmentalism who do not want progress for us (GB's)

Congress will help us tax-payers! Sure, when pigs fly.....;-)

There is no great decrease in the amount of ice, just more some places and not others. Just like snowfall during the winter, some years it is more prevalent in one area of the country and others years in a different area.

There is more ice in the sea because the glaciers are melting and creating icebergs.

GigHarborHound - in partial answer to you question, the article notes sea ice in much of the arctic is below normal levels - just not where Shell wants to drill.

I wonder how long it will take before someone accuses Obama of conjuring the ice to obstruct drilling?
