All of these effing clowns that bite their nose off (or get botox in Hillary's case) just have to do something that appears to be good rather than doing something that will be good. Dropping the fuel taxes won't help get this country in the black.

kdhloretto has a good start with that theory. For the better good, our Gov't could lie to the world and declare that they're getting into the oil biz, and actually develop oil fields for the visual, but not actually do anything. This would show that we're going on our own, and would cause an oil crash like no other. Now if we could keep a secret...

CruisinLinda's got it right. So, when are our elected representatives going to listen? Or are they too deep into the pockets of the futures market?

But here is a quick fix! It took only a year for the price of oil to go from $70 per barrel to $140. The margin requirement is as low as 6 per cent, and the oil-futures market is not registered. The Commodities Futures Trading Commission has sat on its hands as non-consumer speculators ran up the price in oil, as well as other items like gold, bidding against consumers and artificially increasing demand--with as much as 94 per cent borrowed money. The commission could raise margin requirements and limit the participation of non-consumer speculators.

Yeah there is a quicker 'fix.'
Produce more alternative fuels using NON FOOD sources. *****Limit the import of OPEC oil and their world terrorism paid with oil money. Drill and produce oil from the east and west coasts. Build more nuclear plants. Produce more renewable energy from solar, wind, tidal, thermal, and hydro sources. -----Support the grid and drive electric vehicles. Restrict foreign production of goods that can be made in the US. Too much money is flowing out of this county for chepaer services and goods made elsewhere. etc., etc., etc., etc.
Yeah! there is a quick fix and the sooner something is done - the faster it's here.

You want a quick fix? Actually there is one! Remember about a week ago when GW Bush announced his intention to open up offshore and other areas for drilling by lifting the administrative ban? Oil futures prices took a record nosedive! And that was just talk by a lame duck! If congress actually went forward with almost any sort of plan to open up more exploration areas, we would see a more dramatic effect. I can't say how much it might drop, but it would be safe to say that the prices would at least remain more stable for a long time. This would give more time for research for an true alternative wi9thout killing or economy. (Nothing viable exists now)

America has already curtailed its use of oil. But world oil prices are still up, we are told primarily due to demand in China and India. And why do those countries need more oil? To produce goods to sell to -- Americans!
Quick fix: boycott all goods made in China and India.

Bad idea then, bad idea now. Highways are already in bad enough shape. Imagine how much worse with the lack of funding. Also, who wants to be on the back end just before taxes go back up. Can you imagine the gas lines the week before? Stupid idea from stupid people.

No quick fix, but it sure didn't take very long for prices to jump up more than a dollar! That was just last year when it was around $3 a gallon.

There may not be a quick fix, but let's do a long and damaging fix to the oil companies. Let's switch to something else on our next car purchase. It should take 3-4 years max in which we can get them to choke on their oil.

I'm just as glad they didn't put the gas tax break into effect. Imagine the sticker shock at the pump if prices keep rising anyway and then all of a sudden the tax is added back; what a jump that would be.
